Biography
Graeme M. Harper
BSc, CA, ARM, CPCU
In 2009 Graeme entered his 30th year in the insurance and risk management industry. Beginning with Johnson & Higgins (J&H) in Bermuda, he managed 13 captive insurance companies for international clients, covering their insurance and accounting functions. After 6 years in Bermuda, he opened the J&H office in the US Virgin Islands and three years later transferred to Atlanta. During that time, he launched the J&H captive operation in Hawaii.
In 1994, he joined The Home Depot and formed a new risk management function. After launching many initiatives to lower incident frequency and claim severity, he successfully achieved a reduction in their overall total cost of risk. This was followed by several years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in a risk management consulting role.
Graeme returned to risk management in 2001 and headed the function at Winn-Dixie where he successfully reduced their frequency of incidents by 35%. Additional success was achieved by settling 78% of the open claims he inherited in a little over one year. Once again, the insurance brokerage industry beckoned and he joined Marsh. A couple of years later, an opportunity to work with his old boss from Winn-Dixie developed at US Oncology and he set up their risk management department. There, he successfully reduced their premium costs by 48% and reduced the average cost of their workers' compensation claims.
Having spent many years in different facets of the insurance industry, Graeme decided that sufficient experience had been gained and it was time to launch Risk Strategies USA. The firm focuses on working with a variety of clients to develop economic programs that will protect their assets through insurable risks. It uses outsourcing/contracting for corporate clients as a methodology to reduce expenses. Additional services include Alternative Risk Financing studies and ERM development.
He has been a speaker at both National and Florida RIMS, the CICA and VCIA captive insurance conferences and the Orlando Workers' Compensation event. He received his Bachelors degree in Economics from Edinburgh University(BSc) and is a Scottish Chartered Accountant(CA). While in the USA he achieved the Associate in Risk Management(ARM) and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter(CPCU) designations.
